Did you know?

National Watermelon Day is August 3
- no holidays in August? ... a perfect excuse for an August party!

By weight, watermelon is the most-consumed melon in the U.S.,
followed by cantaloupe and honeydew.

In Israel and Egypt, the sweet taste of watermelon
is often paired with the salty taste of feta cheese.

In China and Japan watermelon is a popular gift to bring a host.

How to choose a watermelon
1. Look the watermelon over. You are looking for a firm,
symmetrical watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents.

2. Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for it's size. Watermelon is
92% water, most of the weight is water.

3. Turn it over. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot
from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.

Really Cute Summer Dessert Idea:

How To Make Ice Cream Shaped Like Watermelon
By Donna Rivera

Summer is here and everyone likes the idea of ice cream. If you are throwing a dinner party or just having some friends over for dinner, you will amaze them when you bring out this ice cream dessert. It looks like a watermelon, even when you slice it. It even has the 'seeds'. It is easy to make and so impressive.

Lime Sherbet, softened
Raspberry Sherbet, softened. Or you can use cherry or strawberry. It just needs to be red or pink in color.
mini chocolate chips

Line a large mixing bowl with the softened Lime Sherbet. Think of this lining as the skin of the watermelon. Don't make it too thick, but don't make it too thin either.

Next, mix the chocolate chips with the raspberry sherbet and fill in the rest of the bowl. The red or pink sherbet is the inside of the watermelon and the mini chocolate chips are the watermelon seeds.

Seal the bowl and refreeze the sherbet watermelon. Once the sherbet has refrozen, remove the seal and turn the bowl upside down onto a large plate. Use a warm towel on the bottom of the bowl to help the ice cream release. Slice the "watermelon" and serve. When served, each piece will look like a slice of watermelon and taste yummy, too.

Watermelon Beaded Safety Pin Wearable Craft

Seed Count

Fill a jar with watermelon seeds, and encourage guests to guess the number of seeds in the jar.

Seed Spitting

Lay a long piece of butcher paper on the ground. Guests stand at one end, and compete to spit their seeds the farthest. Mark each guests seed on the paper before the next guest spits.

Watermelon Relay

Can be played in the pool with a floating watermelon, or rolled on dry land.
Teams push watermelons back and forth using only their heads.

Watermelon Eating Contest

Slice dozens of pieces of watermelon, and weigh them so all contestants start with the same amount of watermelon. First guest to finish wins. Establish rules about how much "red" can be left on the rinds, or cut the rinds off beforehand.

Watermelon Polo

This is played in the deep end of a swimming pool. Divide the group into two teams. Throw a watermelon into the pool (it will float). Throw, pass, give, hand, dive, or toss the watermelon to other team members to try to get it past the “goal” of the other team. The team wins who is successful at getting the watermelon to sit on the ledge at the other side of the pool. This is hysterical and a very challenging game, recommended for adults.

Watermelon Carving Contest

If guests are adults, provide knives and carving tools for contestants to create the most creative watermelon display. Blindfold them for hilarious results. For kids, plastic knives might work, have them cut shapes into individual slices of melon.
